PERFECT GLEN
THE SUN (SCOTLAND)
19 SEPTEMBER 2003
Girls (and guys) just love Hamish
Scots telly star Hamish Clark has become the superstud of Monarch
Of The Glen.
The handsome hunk - cheeky chappie estate hand Duncan in the hit
Sunday night drama - gets sackloads of fanmail from women drooling
over his bod in a kilt, leaving resident pin-up Alastair Mackenzie
in the shade.
And it’s made him the centre of romantic action on AND off
screen.
The superfit actor has become a babe magnet and admits he “does
alright” with ladies who like a bit of rough.
He said: “I get women of a certain age who often refer to me as a
manchild. I even get letters from 13 and 14 year olds as well.
“I love Duncan, he’s a great wee lad and it’s a gift of a role.”
Rugged
But it’s not just the ladies who have fallen for his rugged looks.
Hamish has developed a massive GAY following, too. He said: “I don’t
mind a bit. If Beckham can have gay fans, then it’s fine by me.”
However, Hamish has some competition for the title of all-out
Monarch sex God - Sandy Morton who plays gamekeeper Golly.
Hamish added: “He’s the favourite with the ladies - and his fan
mail can get really saucy!
“It must be because he’s the quiet mysterious type.”
The fifth series of the BBC Scotland drama returns next weekend
and sees newlyweds Archie and Lexie - played by Alastair Mackenzie
and Dawn Steele - return to Glenbogle after their honeymoon.
Alastair has since quit the show and Archie exits halfway through
the series - but several new characters are in the wings. They
include Lloyd Owen as Archie’s half-brother Paul, Rae Hendrie as
Golly’s daughter Jessica, Martin Compston as loveable rogue Ewan,
Richenda Carey as Killwillie’s stuck-up sister Lady Dorothy and
Hermione Gulliford as her daughter Hermione.
Hermione has Duncan in her sights and, as he falls for feisty
girl ghillie Jessie, he finds himself at the centre of an hilarious
love triangle.
Hamish said: “After four series of Duncan being unlucky in love,
it’s fantastic to have some romance.
“There’s lots of physical stuff and it was hilarious to film.
Hermione is like one of the girls out of a PG Wodehouse novel. I’d
say I’m definitely the lucky b*****d in this series.”
Hamish - originally from Broughty Ferry, near Dundee - first shot
to fame as the star of a series of adverts for Vodafone.
He said: “They wanted Ewan McGregor, but he was busy. We sound
quite alike, so they got me.
“It was a fantastic gig and I did more than 20 adverts. Out of
that I had three trips to Spain, and about 20 trips to Africa.
“I’ve done deserts, rockfaces, beaches, safari, you name it. Then
when Monarch came along, the two were being shown on TV at the same
time. It was just huge and my profile went right up.
“The weirdest thing was when I was working abroad in Auckland in
New Zealand and, for the first time in my life, I was being
recognised. It was incredible.
“It all got a bit bizarre at the hotel when someone came to get
me out of the pool because the Prime Minister had arrived and wanted
to meet me for breakfast.”
Hamish was the Vodafone star for four years, only being replaced
in 2001 by David Beckham.
Amazed
And the down-to-earth star admits he’s still amazed at the change
fame has made to his life.
He added: “I take it all one day and one series at a time. I love
Monarch and Sunday night feel-good TV is fantastic.
“But it’s not everything. I want to do movies. I have some ideas
for projects of my own and I want to try the West End.
“I was up for a huge American movie last week, but I don’t know
yet if I’ve got it.
“The biggest thing for me is that I remember slogging my guts out
in factories, trying to get a break and now I’m sitting in
high-powered meetings in the US.
“That change is all down to Monarch.”
Monarch is back on Sunday, September 28, 8pm on BBC1.
